Abstract: Crossfire is a company active in the Research and Development of technologies linked to mass composites production. The development of Structural Sandwich Panels suitable for their use for houses constructions is one of the main objectives of the Company, which, on the basis of the principles of eco-sustainability and recycling in an economic circular field, designs them with high adaptability to the required standards of comfort living. Thermal waterproofing at different levels, as well as fire resistance and the ability to break down bacteriological and viral charges, are some of the surface peculiarities that Crossfire can give and add to its Panels in addition to the well known Structurality and Lightness.


The use of solar reflecting colorants and formulating colors based on TSR

Abstract: In this presentation the different properties of various solar reflective black pigments are being discussed. It is also shown that the subject on which the coating is applied plays an important role in the resulting solar reflective properties of the coating. In addition, we highlight the use of a TSR-module in our color matching software to enable the formulation of colors with respect to the optimum TSR based on the available colorants in the color system.

Self-cleaning elastomeric cool roof coatings with superior performance

Abstract: In warm and sunny areas of the world, the use of elastomeric cool roof coatings are becoming more and more vital to reduce the need for air conditioning and to keep energy consumption down. Expancel Microspheres are used as filler in elastomeric cool roof coatings to improve several important properties. They help reflect solar radiation and reduce the temperature of the coating. Results from solar reflectance measurements show that the coating system filled with hollow microspheres reflect solar radiation of all incoming wavelengths. Hollow microspheres can be combined with reflecting pigments, making it possible to formulate coatings with extremely high values for total solar reflectance (TSR).
Another important property is the elasticity, this is also improved when our resilient thermoplastic hollow microspheres are used instead of inorganic fillers. Inherently these types of coatings have a soft character and face a challenge regarding dirt pick-up resistance. However, high elasticity can be combined with dirt pick-up resistance in a cost-efficient manner. This is done by adding silane modified Levasil Colloidal Silica that enhances the self-cleaning properties without sacrificing total solar reflectance. Proven solar reflectance for paints, plastics and more

Abstract: As we emerge from COVID-19, we expect to see renewed emphasis on regeneration, driven by energy-saving action plans such as the Green Deal. Coatings, as the first line of defence in the built environment, will have a key role to play in contributing to the ambitious environmental targets. Cool roofing provides an important focus for Venator’s ALTIRIS® rangeof infrared reflecting pigments with its proven abilityto enhance solar reflectance and cut energy consumption. ALTIRIS® 550 and ALTIRIS® 800have become established products enabling increased solar reflectance in dark and vivid colours. Solar-reflective properties of building surfaces: physical relevance, performance requirements and ISO/IEC 17025 certification in an Italian perspective.

Abstract: A simple yet effective approach, based on the so-called sol-air temperature, will be used to explain the physical meaning and actual impact properties such as solar reflectance, thermal emittance and solar reflectance index on the thermal behavior of building surfaces. Italian performance requirements for those properties will be summarized, as well as measurement methods available for performance certification. Finally, the issue of durability of the performance will be touched.

Quartzene – sustainable aerogel for high performance coating solutions

Hollow Ceramic Microspheres: Enhancing Insulating Properties and promoting Heat Resistance in Coating Systems

AbstractThermally efficient/low-density coatings for roofing and other insulating applications including high-temperature resistance coatings (refractory coatings) can be achieved with the use of Hollow Ceramic Microspheres (HCM). Due to their spherical structure and low absorbing properties, these can be incorporated at relatively high loads without significantly impacting the rheology properties of the coating. The partial vacuum inside the core of each spherical particle of E-SPHERES® HCM contributes to outstanding thermal insulating properties.
The experiment demonstrates the improvement of thermal insulating properties in coatings, by comparing surface temperatures in two individual steel panels coated in the same color:

  • One is coated with an industrial-grade polyurethane coating.
  • The other panel has the same paint system modified with HCM.
  • The lamps simulate direct sun radiation on the panels while measuring the temperature of the underside of each panel, simulating conductive heat transfer through a roof into the interior of a building. The experimental results show a 15% temperature difference between the two product systems. This difference translates to significant energy savings in the thermal performance of a building and correspondingly, potential CO2 emissions abatement.

Energy efficient cool roof coatings & membranes based on TiO2

Abstract: Roof coatings and membranes are a building’s first line of defense against nature. They are subject to damage by wind, rain, heat, and sun. Left unprotected from UV exposure, they can lose flexibility and become vulnerable to cracking, thereby reducing the service life of the roof. The initial color and strength of the products can degrade over time. Thus, roof coatings and membranes demand superior durability to protect the building against the ravages of nature. In summer, the sun’s rays can heat dark roof surfaces to 70°C or higher. White or light-colored “cool” roofs, on the other hand, reflect much of that solar energy, keeping roof surfaces up to 30°C cooler. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) can provide maximum protection for extended service life of roof surfaces by reducing thermal loading and improve overall energy efficiency by heat absorption. Cool roof coatings and membranes made with high-quality Ti-Pure ™ TiO2 provide superior brightness and whiteness as well as high solar reflectance and thermal emittance for maximum effectiveness. Ti-Pure ™ TiO2 grades suitable for roof surfaces have the perfect combination of weatherability, optics, and processability to meet the most exacting requirements.

Structured silica coating for thermal insulation

Abstract: Aerospace application or industrial thermal energy application as thermal energy storage requires high thermal insulating materials featuring high mechanical properties. However, the use of traditional insulation materials based on organic chemistry reduces their use due to their poor fire resistance, while inorganic insulation ones are either stiff or display a high thermal conductivity. Nanoprom has developed a structured silica coating for thermal insulation with excellent thermal and mechanical characteristics; the coating is fire-resistant and can be integrated with specific materials such as titanium dioxide to reduce the absorption and transmission of infrared radiation. The reduced transmission of infrared inside the coating allows both to shield the treated surfaces by reducing the absorption of heat and to reduce radiation while preserving heat in cold climates, combined with a heat transmission coefficient of only 15mW / mK, making it an excellent material for surface insulation.

Alluminium Pigments for functional coatings

Abstract: Energy saving and the reduction of the climate-damaging CO2 play an increasingly essential role in future. Intelligent coating systems can already today make a substantial contribution to these important objectives. Aluminium exhibits one of the highest IR-reflection characteristics amongst all known metals. Aluminium pigments can be used in lacquers, e. g. in wall paints, and show after their application and depending on the intended purpose either a heat-insulating or a heat-reducing effect. They can also cause building spaces to heat up considerably less.
